Twelve questions, three rounds of four, and each round is chosen by how the last one went: answer well and the next four get harder, struggle and they get easier. In about six minutes it finds the rung you are actually standing on and hands you one lesson to start with.
It is a benchmark, not a gate. Nothing on this site locks — every lesson stays open at every level, whatever this says. It awards no stars and no badges, and it never writes to your report card: a placement is a measurement, and letting a measurement mint stars would spoil the only number in the room that is earned. Take it again in a month; the placement is the part that compares.
