Exam-hall rules, last item on the agenda

This is the boss. No calculator. Every value has been chosen to fit in your head, and the two useful moves are worth naming: ×1.5 is itself plus half of itself, and ×0.9 is itself minus a tenth. Write each line down as you go, because every answer feeds the next — one early slip walks all the way to the ruling.

Part one is the static check: factor the loads, carry them out to the column face, build the section's plastic moment, trim it by the resistance factor φ, and set capacity beside demand. Part two is the fatigue file: the Goodman margin on the critical weld, then Miner's running total over a counted year, then how much of block two is left before the budget closes.

And both parts end where a real review ends — with a ruling. A design review that computes five numbers and never says yes or no has not been held. Sign it off, or send it back. Clock in.
