hp (elec)
electrical horsepower
Powerexact by definition
The electrical horsepower is exactly 746 watts, a rounded value adopted by the US electrical industry for motor ratings. It is 0.04 percent above the mechanical horsepower, close enough that nameplate calculations use the round number and nobody minds.
Watch out: A motor nameplate horsepower is SHAFT OUTPUT, not electrical input. A 10 hp motor at 90 percent efficiency draws 8.3 kW from the line while delivering 7.46 kW to the load, so sizing a feeder from the nameplate horsepower alone undersizes it.
