L/mol
liter per mole
Molar volumeexact by definition
The litre per mole is the everyday unit of molar volume for gases, exactly 0.001 m³/mol by decimal prefix. One mole of an ideal gas occupies 22.414 L at 0 °C and 101.325 kPa, or 22.711 L at 0 °C and 100 kPa, the current IUPAC standard pressure. At 25 °C and 100 kPa it is 24.79 L/mol.
Watch out: The famous 22.4 L/mol figure is tied to a specific standard condition, and there are several in circulation. IUPAC changed standard pressure from 101.325 kPa to 100 kPa in 1982, which moved the number to 22.711 L/mol; much teaching material still quotes 22.4. Always state the temperature and pressure alongside a molar gas volume.
