Magnetic fluxexact by definition
The maxwell is the CGS unit of magnetic flux, exactly 1e-8 weber. It is one gauss through one square centimetre, and it is the flux that motor and transformer designers called a line: a core carrying 10 kilogauss over 10 cm² carries 100000 maxwells, or 100000 lines. The conversion is exact by definition between coherent unit systems.

Where the unit came from
Named for James Clerk Maxwell. The older name for the same quantity, the line of force, comes straight from Faraday's mental picture of the field as a bundle of elastic threads, and machine design texts of the first half of the twentieth century count lines rather than maxwells throughout.
