mL
milliliter
Volumeexact by definition
The millilitre is one thousandth of a litre, exactly 10⁻⁶ m³, which is identical to one cubic centimetre. It is the standard unit of small liquid volumes in medicine, cooking and the laboratory. The factor is exact by definition.
Watch out: A millilitre and a cubic centimetre are exactly the same volume, so "cc" and "mL" are interchangeable and 5 cc equals 5 mL. This has only been strictly true since 1964: between 1901 and 1964 the litre was defined by the mass of water rather than by the cubic decimetre, and one old litre was 1.000028 dm³. Medical practice now prefers mL because a handwritten "cc" can be misread.
