Grain handling capacity is the quiet constraint in a harvest system. A combine that can fill a tank in twelve minutes is no faster than the auger emptying the cart into the bin, and the whole line runs at the speed of its narrowest point. Quantity divided by rate gives the hours, and the value of the calculation is in comparing that answer to the harvesting side rather than in the division itself.
Augers are rated in bushels per hour and grain is often inventoried in tonnes, so a conversion is usually needed first, and it goes through the crop's test weight. A 5,000 bu/h auger moving corn at 56 lb per bushel is handling 280,000 lb/h, which is 127 t/h. The same auger on oats moves the same volume and barely 73 t/h, because oats are light. As with bin capacity, there is no single bushels-to-tonnes factor, and a handling system sized in one unit for a crop quoted in the other is a mistake waiting for the first load.
Rated capacity is a laboratory figure and the yard rarely reproduces it. Three effects reduce it, in roughly this order of importance. Intake flooding is the big one: an auger only moves what its flighting picks up, and a hopper that is not kept full is the usual reason a machine runs at a fraction of its rating. Operating angle is next — a portable auger at 45° may deliver only 60–70% of its horizontal rating, because material falls back down the flighting as it rises. Then comes the grain itself: damp, trashy or unusually light material feeds and conveys worse than the clean dry test material the rating was measured on.
The system consequence is that handling capacity should be sized with real margin over the harvesting rate, and matched to a buffer. A grain cart is exactly that buffer, and its value is that it lets the combine keep moving while the auger works at its own pace rather than in bursts. Where no buffer exists, the arithmetic is unforgiving: a combine that fills in twelve minutes and unloads through an auger needing eighteen spends a third of the day parked, and the fix is nearly always cheaper on the handling side than on the harvesting side.
