This is the forage balance in its simplest honest form: take the dry matter standing on the paddock, keep only the share the animals will actually harvest, and divide by what the herd eats in a day. Twelve thousand kilograms of standing forage at 50% utilisation feeds a herd eating 240 kg a day for days.
The utilisation rate is the term that separates this calculation from wishful thinking, and it is far lower than most people expect. Animals trample forage, foul it with dung and urine, bed on it, and select the best of it while leaving the rest standing. Continuous season-long grazing harvests perhaps 25–35% of what grows; well-managed rotational grazing reaches 50–65%; anything above that is being taken out of next year's growth. The old rule of thumb — take half, leave half — is not sentiment about the plants. The residual leaf area is the solar panel that regrows the sward, the litter that shades and cools the soil surface, and the signal that lets the plant keep its root reserves instead of spending them on regrowth.
Carrying capacity is the MEASUREMENT that stocking rate, the decision, has to be checked against. Confusing the two is the second classic mistake in grazing management, and it is expensive in a way that shows up a season late: a stocking rate set above carrying capacity does not fail immediately, it fails by drawing down the sward's reserves until a dry year arrives and there is nothing left to draw on. The paddock that carried the herd fine for three years is suddenly bare in July of the fourth, and the cause was the stocking decision made in each of the previous three.
Take the forage estimate seriously, because the answer scales directly with it. Clipping and drying quadrats is the honest method; a rising plate meter or a calibrated eye is faster and adequate once checked against clippings on the same swards. And treat the answer as a snapshot rather than a season plan — pasture keeps growing while it is being grazed, so the actual grazing days exceed this figure during active growth and fall short of it in a drought or after a hard frost. The calculation is a decision tool for the next move, and it is worth re-running at every move.
