This is the same division as the stand count without the sampling fraction, and it answers the question a field's row spacing raises as soon as anything has to be bought or done per metre of row. A hectare at 75 cm spacing contains 10,000/0.75=13,33310{,}000/0.75 = 13{,}333 m of row — thirteen and a third kilometres. An acre at 30-inch rows contains 43,560/2.5=17,42443{,}560/2.5 = 17{,}424 ft, which is exactly a thousand times the 17.424 ft of the 1/1000th-acre stand count, because that is precisely what a thousandth of an acre means.

The metric form is worth memorising as a shortcut: metres of row per hectare is 10,000 divided by the row spacing in metres. So 50 cm rows give 20,000 m/ha, 75 cm give 13,333, and 1 m rows give 10,000 exactly. Halve the spacing and you double the row length, which is the fact that makes narrow rows expensive for anything installed along the row and free for anything that simply drives over it.

What it buys you is a materials order and a labour estimate. Drip tape for a 4-hectare block at 1.5 m spacing needs 4×10,000/1.5=26,6674 \times 10{,}000/1.5 = 26{,}667 m of tape, and tape is sold on 1,000 m or 2,300 m rolls, so that is a purchase decision rather than an abstraction. Plastic mulch, row cover, in-row hand weeding, hand harvest and per-plant treatments all scale on this number and not on the area, which is why a market gardener's costs per hectare rise sharply as spacing narrows even though the land is the same land.

The mistake is forgetting the headland. A field is not a perfect rectangle sown to the fence, and the turning area at each end is not planted or is planted across the rows, so the real row length in a small or awkwardly shaped field can be 5 to 15% under the calculation. Order tape and cover on the calculated figure and you have a comfortable margin; estimate hand-weeding hours on it and you have overpaid. The equation gives an upper bound, and the shape of the field decides how loose a bound it is.
