The foot-pound is the work done by one pound-force acting through one foot, exactly 1.3558179483314 joules. The value is exact because both the pound-force and the foot are exactly defined. It is used for muzzle energy, impact testing and older mechanical work calculations.

Watch out: Convention distinguishes the energy from the torque by word order in some traditions, writing foot-pound (ft·lb) for energy and pound-foot (lb·ft) for torque. The convention is not universally observed, so read the context. The two quantities have identical units but are physically different, exactly as the joule and the newton metre are.
