One inch of extension per inch of original length — the customary form of the same plain ratio as m/m, and numerically identical to it. A strain of 0.002 is 0.002 in/in whichever system the tester works in, which is the practical consequence of the units cancelling.

Watch out: Because in/in and m/m are the same number, a strain value never needs converting between systems and a conversion factor applied by habit will silently corrupt it. The stress beside it does need converting; the strain does not.
