in·lbf
inch pound-force
Torqueexact by definition
The inch pound-force is one pound-force applied at one inch from the axis, exactly one twelfth of a foot pound-force, or about 0.11298 N·m. The definition is exact although the decimal repeats. It is the unit for small fasteners, instrument screws and electronics assembly, where foot-pounds would give inconveniently small numbers.
Watch out: The factor of 12 between in·lbf and ft·lbf is a frequent source of over-torqued fasteners. A spec of 30 in·lbf is 2.5 ft·lbf, and setting a wrench to 30 ft·lbf instead applies twelve times the intended torque, which will strip most small threads.
