One kilogram of dissolved substance per cubic metre of solution — the SI coherent form of this quantity, and numerically identical to one gram per litre. It appears in process engineering and in equations derived from first principles, where working in base SI units keeps the algebra honest.

Watch out: Identical in value to the density unit of the same name, and a different quantity. Density is the mass of a substance per its own volume; this is the mass of a solute per the volume of the solution holding it. Water has a density of 1000 kg/m³ and can carry a salt at a mass concentration of 35 kg/m³, and the two numbers describe different things.

Where the unit came from

It is what the SI produces when mass over volume is written in base units, which is also why it is the canonical form this site converts everything through. That it is nearly unused in practice is a fair illustration of the gap between a coherent unit system and the units trades actually reach for.
