megaampere

Electric currentexact by definition

The megaampere is one million amperes. It belongs to the few machines that carry that much: a tokamak plasma current is quoted in megaamperes, with ITER designed for 15 MA, and pulsed power machines for inertial confinement reach the low tens. The factor of 1e6 is exact, being an SI prefix.

Watch out: Aluminium smelting potlines, often described as megaampere installations, actually run in the high hundreds of kiloamperes per cell. A line total is a sum over cells in series, which carry the same current rather than adding it.
