One megapascal root metre, the working unit of fracture toughness. It measures how much stress intensity a material tolerates at a crack tip before the crack runs — the property that decides whether a flaw is tolerable or fatal.
Watch out: Fracture toughness is not a single number for a material. It falls with section thickness until plane-strain conditions are reached, falls with temperature through the ductile-to-brittle transition, and falls with loading rate. A handbook value measured on a thick plane-strain specimen may badly overstate what a thin section delivers.

About the megapascal root meter
Fracture toughness answers a question ordinary strength cannot: not how much stress a material carries, but how much it tolerates with a crack already in it. A structure can sit far below yield and still fail, if a flaw is long enough that the stress intensity at its tip reaches the material's critical value.
The unit looks strange until you build it from Irwin's relation. Stress intensity is — a geometry factor, times remote stress, times the root of crack length. Pascals times root metres gives Pa·√m, and the megapascal version is the size that suits real materials: structural steel runs perhaps 50 MPa·√m, aluminium alloys 20 to 40, and engineering ceramics under 5.
The imperial equivalent is ksi·√in, and the conversion is one worth having exact rather than approximate: . The near-unity factor is a coincidence of the two systems and it invites the assumption that they are interchangeable. They are not, and the nine percent difference compounds through a critical-crack-size calculation.
What makes the property genuinely useful is that it turns a measured flaw into a decision. Given toughness, a geometry factor and an operating stress, the critical crack length follows directly — and so does the answer to whether the indication an inspector just found means shut down now or monitor at the next outage.
