N·m
newton meter
Torqueexact by definition
The newton metre is the SI unit of torque, one newton of force applied at one metre of perpendicular distance from the axis. Its factor is 1 by construction and the unit is exact. It has the same dimensions as the joule but is never written as a joule, because torque is a moment rather than an energy.
Watch out: Torque and energy share units and are different quantities. A torque applied through an angle produces work, with one newton metre of torque through one radian giving one joule. Writing a torque in joules or an energy in newton metres invites exactly the confusion the convention exists to prevent.
