About Darmstadtium
Darmstadtium was made by cold fusion in the accelerator sense — firing nickel-62 at a lead-208 target so the compound nucleus forms with as little excitation energy as possible, maximising the chance it survives instead of fissioning. The GSI team detected a single atom on 9 November 1994. Nobody has done any chemistry on it, and even the electron configuration is a calculation; whether it resembles platinum in any way is unknown, so the category is left open here. The name follows GSI's habit of honouring its own geography, alongside hassium for the state of Hesse. Its longest-lived isotope, darmstadtium-281, lasts about fourteen seconds.
