About Holmium
Holmium's ten unpaired-electron configuration gives it a magnetic moment of 10.6 Bohr magnetons, the largest of any element, so a holmium pole piece inserted into an electromagnet concentrates flux and pushes the achievable field higher than the coil alone could manage. Its other everyday appearance is medical: the Ho:YAG laser at 2100 nm is strongly absorbed by water, making it the standard tool for fragmenting kidney stones and resecting prostate tissue with almost no thermal damage beyond the cut. Holmium oxide solutions have unusually sharp absorption peaks and are sold as the standard for calibrating the wavelength scale of a spectrophotometer. Named for Holmia, the Latin name for Stockholm.
