About Neon
Ramsay and Travers found neon in 1898 by fractionating liquid air, and Travers wrote that the crimson glow of its discharge tube told its own story and was a sight to dwell upon. Georges Claude turned that glow into commerce, showing the first neon sign in Paris in 1910; strictly, only the orange-red tubes are neon, since every other colour comes from argon, mercury vapour or a phosphor coating. Neon also has a quiet claim on the history of physics: in 1913 J. J. Thomson passed neon ions through electric and magnetic fields and saw two parabolas, at masses 20 and 22 — the first demonstration that a stable, non-radioactive element could exist as more than one isotope. It is chemically inert to the point of having no known stable compounds at all.
