About Nickel
Nickel got its name the same way cobalt did: German miners called the useless red ore Kupfernickel, Old Nick's copper, because it looked like copper and gave none, and Axel Cronstedt kept the insult when he isolated the metal in 1751. Nickel is what makes austenitic stainless steel austenitic — the ubiquitous 304 grade is roughly 18% chromium and 8% nickel — and it goes into superalloys, plating and rechargeable battery chemistries. Note that its atomic weight, 58.693, is slightly lower than cobalt's 58.933 even though its atomic number is higher, one of only four such inversions in the whole table. Around 10–20% of people are sensitised to nickel and react to jewellery and belt buckles, which is why the EU has regulated nickel release from skin-contact items since 1994. The Sudbury basin, one of the great nickel deposits, is an impact crater.
