About Seaborgium
IUPAC initially rejected seaborgium on the grounds that no element had ever been named for a living person, then reversed itself in 1997 after the American Chemical Society objected — pointing out among other things that einsteinium had been named while Einstein was alive, just secretly. Seaborg took quiet pleasure in being able to receive mail addressed in chemical symbols. He earned it: he co-discovered plutonium through nobelium, and his 1944 actinide concept, which relocated an entire block of the table, was the insight that made the transuranics findable at all. Gas-phase work in 1997 produced SgO₂Cl₂ and confirmed group 6 behaviour, molybdenum and tungsten's chemistry surviving 106 protons.
