About Tennessine

Tennessine exists because Oak Ridge could make 22 mg of berkelium-249 and Dubna could fire calcium-48 at it. The target had a 330-day half-life, so the material was shipped to Russia and used immediately; the 2010 campaign yielded six atoms. The name honours the state of Tennessee for Oak Ridge, Vanderbilt and the University of Tennessee, and it takes the -ine ending because element 117 sits in the halogen column. Whether it deserves that ending chemically is another matter: relativistic calculations suggest tennessine would not readily form the −1 anion that defines a halogen, and might behave more like a metal, which is why no category is asserted here.
