About Uranium
In 1972 French analysts found uranium from the Oklo mine in Gabon that was measurably short of uranium-235 — 0.717 % instead of the invariable 0.720 %. The explanation is that roughly 1.7 billion years ago, when natural enrichment was still around 3 %, groundwater seeping through the ore acted as a moderator and sixteen natural fission reactors ignited, running in pulses for a few hundred thousand years at a few dozen kilowatts. Oklo remains the only known natural reactor, and it doubles as a very long-term field test of whether fission products stay put in geology. Klaproth found uranium in 1789 and named it for the newly discovered planet Uranus; for 150 years its main use was colouring glass a fluorescent yellow-green.
