Yield is three things multiplied together: how many plants, how much each plant made, and how heavy each piece of it is. The corn version counts ears per unit area and kernels per ear, then divides by the number of kernels it takes to fill a bushel. Extension services teach it as the "90,000 method" because 90,000 kernels per bushel is the long-run average, and the calculation has been done in Ontario and Iowa field days for the better part of a century.
The counting procedure matters more than the equation. Measure a length of row that equals one thousandth of an acre — 17 ft 5 in on 30-inch rows — count the harvestable ears in it, and multiply by 1000 to get ears per acre. Pull the fifth, eighth and eleventh ear, count rows around and kernels along each, average them, and drop the tip kernels that will not fill. Thirty-two thousand ears at 500 kernels gives bushels per acre.
The kernels-per-bushel factor is where the honest uncertainty lives, and it is an inverse kernel weight in disguise: fat, well-filled kernels mean fewer of them per bushel. Use 75,000 to 80,000 in a season with good moisture through grain fill, 90,000 as a neutral default, and 100,000 to 110,000 after drought or an early frost. That range alone moves the estimate by a third, which is the honest precision of the method and the reason it should be reported as a spread rather than a number.
Two cautions. Counted before the milk line has moved down the kernel, the estimate assumes a grain fill that has not happened yet, and drought, disease or frost between the count and the combine can still remove a fifth of it — the method predicts potential, not outcome. And a single strip is worth almost nothing: field variation swamps counting error, so take five or six counts spread across the field and quote the range they give. What the number is genuinely good for is planning — marketing decisions, bin space and drying capacity — not for settling arguments about what the field will actually do.
