This is the step where a label rate becomes something you can put on a scale, and it is deliberately the second calculation rather than the first. You cannot know how much product goes in a tank until you know how much ground that tank covers, which is why area per tank comes first and this multiplication follows it.

The classic and costly error is mixing up the two rates in play. A label carries a product rate — so many kilograms or litres of the formulation per hectare — and separately a carrier volume, the water that delivers it. These are independent. Changing the water volume from 100 to 150 L/ha does not change how much product goes on the crop; it changes only the concentration in the tank and the coverage on the leaf. Growers who adjust the product to match a changed water volume double-dose the field.

Weigh dry products rather than measuring them by volume. Wettable powders and water-dispersible granules vary enough in bulk density between batches, and settle enough in the bag, that a scoop is not a reliable measure — the same volume of the same product can differ by more than ten percent in mass. A cheap digital scale is the least expensive risk reduction available to anyone applying pesticide. And add dry formulations to a part-filled tank with the agitator running, never to an empty one, or they cake on the bottom and never disperse.
