emu

emu (magnetic moment)

Magnetic momentexact by definition

The emu of magnetic moment is the CGS electromagnetic unit, exactly 1e-3 joules per tesla, or one erg per gauss. It is what magnetometer software prints and what the magnetism literature reports, usually normalised as emu per gram or emu per cubic centimetre to give a magnetisation. The conversion is exact by definition of the CGS units.

Watch out: Emu is not one unit. It is a prefix meaning electromagnetic unit and is attached to several different CGS quantities, so emu of moment, emu of magnetisation and emu of susceptibility are different things with the same label. Always read the quantity name rather than the abbreviation, and check whether a magnetisation is per gram or per cubic centimetre before comparing two samples.
