A kilokelvin is 1000 K exactly. It is a convenience unit rather than a tradition: plasma, flame and blackbody temperatures land between about 1 and 10 kK, and writing 5.8 kK for the sun's surface is easier to compare at a glance than 5772 K.
Watch out: It is uncommon in print. Most sources in this range write the kelvin value out in full, so expect to convert back before quoting a number to anyone else.
