Cost per thousand US gallons is the standard billing rate for municipal water and sewer service across much of the United States. It equals about 0.2642 dollars per cubic metre for each dollar per thousand gallons, the conversion being exact since the US gallon is exactly defined. Utility rate schedules and conservation analyses in the United States are almost always written in this unit.

Watch out: Water bills are frequently issued in units of 100 cubic feet, called CCF or HCF, rather than thousands of gallons. One CCF is 748.05 US gallons, so a rate per CCF is not a rate per thousand gallons and the two differ by about 25 percent.
