bpm

beat per minute

Frequencyexact by definition

The beat per minute is exactly 1/60 hertz. It is the unit of musical tempo and of heart and respiratory rate: a resting adult heart runs 60 to 100 bpm, and a moderate-tempo track sits near 120.

Watch out: Tempo in bpm counts beats, not notes, and the beat unit depends on the time signature: 120 bpm in 6/8 counted in dotted quarters is a different pulse rate than 120 bpm in 4/4. In clinical use, watch that respiratory rate and heart rate share the abbreviation.
