microbarn

Areaexact by definition

The microbarn is 10⁻³⁴ square metres, a millionth of a barn. Particle physics lives here and below: production cross sections at colliders are quoted in microbarns, nanobarns, picobarns and femtobarns, and the integrated luminosity that produces them is quoted in inverse units of the same.

Watch out: Collider datasets are described in inverse femtobarns, which is a count per unit cross section rather than an area. Multiplying an inverse femtobarn of luminosity by a cross section in femtobarns gives a number of events, which is the whole point of the unit.
