The square kilometre is the area of a square one kilometre on a side, exactly 10⁶ m² or 100 hectares. It is the standard unit for the areas of cities, lakes, forests and countries. The factor is exact by definition.
Watch out: A square kilometre is not "a kilometre squared" in the sense of two kilometres: doubling a linear dimension quadruples the area. A square kilometre is about 0.386 square miles or 247 acres.
