rood

rood

Areaexact by definition

A rood is exactly a quarter of an acre, 1,011.7141056 square metres, or 40 square rods. British and Irish land was traditionally described in acres, roods and perches, written as "3a 2r 14p", and that notation appears throughout historical title deeds and tithe maps.

Watch out: The word also names a length in some old sources, generally a rod or a variant of it, so a rood in an old document should be checked against its context before being read as an area.
