The square metre measures the built world: floor plans, land registry parcels, glazing schedules, paint and carpet coverage, property prices per m². Some anchors for judging a figure: an interior door is about 1.6 m², a parking bay around 12 m², a tennis court about 261 m² inside the doubles lines, and a small apartment 40 to 60 m². The metric chain upward is clean, with 100 m² to the are (now nearly extinct) and 10,000 m² to the hectare.

Its larger role is invisible, because the square metre is the silent denominator of the SI. The pascal is a newton per square metre, the lux a lumen per square metre, the tesla a weber per square metre, and solar irradiance arrives in watts per square metre, so the unit does more work inside other units than it does measuring floors. That is also how it enters this site's heat-loss and HVAC calculations: a U-value in W/(m²·K), an area in m² and a temperature difference multiply straight to watts. When a floor-area number matters commercially, ask what convention produced it, since internal, external and gross measures of the same building can differ by well over 10%.
