This is the shortest formula in the shard and the one that decides the invoice: the carrier bills the larger of what the package weighs and what its size says it should weigh. . That is all.
What makes it worth a page is the consequence. Because the rule takes a maximum, dimensional weight can only ever cost you money — it never lowers a bill. A dense package is billed on the scale and its dimensional weight is irrelevant; a light one is billed on its size and its scale weight is irrelevant. So the whole of a shipper's leverage lives on one side: if your freight is lighter than the carrier's dimensional density, packaging work pays, and if it is denser, packaging work does nothing at all for the freight bill. The density test tells you which world you are in before you spend a dollar finding out, and that is the practical reason the shipment-density page exists.
The real rule is usually a three-way maximum. Many services put a floor underneath both figures: max(actual, dimensional, service minimum). A UPS Large Package is billed at no less than 90 lb however light and however small it is; other surcharge categories carry their own minimums. I have kept the formula at two terms because that is the relation people are looking for and because the minimums differ by carrier and by service and would date the page instantly. Add the floor yourself from your own service guide — it is a third number in the same maximum, and it changes nothing about the arithmetic.
max() does not invert, and the page says so. If I hand you a chargeable weight of 40 lb, you cannot recover the two numbers behind it. You learn that neither exceeded 40, and that at least one equalled it, and nothing else. The inverse brains above return a documented branch — the case where the variable you are solving for is the one that governed — and the answer they give is a ceiling, not a measurement. This is not a limitation the site could engineer away. It is what a maximum does: it throws information out, deliberately, and no algebra puts it back. If you need the scale weight, weigh the package.
One habit worth forming. When a bill surprises you, compute the dimensional weight from the dimensions on the label and compare it with the chargeable weight on the invoice. If they match, you were billed on size, and you now know the divisor the carrier actually applied — divide the volume by the billed weight and see whether it is the number in your contract. That single check catches mis-measured parcels, wrong divisors, and dimensional weight applied to services that should have been exempt.
