Weight utilisation is the payload half of the pair: cargo weight over payload limit. Take it together with cube utilisation and you have the only test that matters when a trailer leaves less than full — which constraint bound the load?

The test is as simple as it sounds. Compute both utilisations for the same load and see which is nearer its ceiling. The higher one bound; the lower one is capacity you paid for and did not use. There is a second route to the same answer that needs no load at all: compare the freight's density with the equipment's crossover density. Denser than the crossover and the load will weigh out; lighter and it will cube out. The two tests give the same result because they are the same test — one done after the fact with a scale and a tape, the other done in advance with two numbers off a spec sheet.

Knowing which constraint binds is what makes the rest of the effort worth spending. If a lane weighs out, packaging improvements are wasted — the boxes are not the problem and shrinking them changes nothing. If it cubes out, weight-saving is wasted, and every hour spent on lighter packaging materials buys nothing at all. Almost every logistics improvement is aimed at one constraint or the other, and aiming at the wrong one is the most expensive kind of hard work.

A word about what the payload limit actually is. It is not the gross vehicle weight. It is what remains after tare — the tractor, the trailer or chassis, and, for intermodal freight, the container itself. That is why a 40 ft box that plates at 30,480 kg gross carries nowhere near that on a US highway: the 80,000 lb legal gross has to cover tractor, chassis, container and cargo together, and cargo is the last thing in the queue. Planning against the container's plate rather than the road's limit is a recurring and expensive mistake in domestic drayage.

Finally, on trucks specifically, being inside the gross limit is not the same as being legal. Weight has to be distributed within axle-group limits as well, and a load that passes on the gross can be over on the drives or the tandems because of where it was placed in the trailer. This page will happily return a figure above 100 per cent, with a note, because overweight loads are a real thing planners calculate deliberately when sizing an overflow — but a load above the limit is a legal exposure at the scale and a liability question afterwards, and the answer is fewer pieces or a second unit, not a rounder number.
