Freight has always been priced on weight, and for most of history that was fine, because most of what moved was dense. Then catalogue retail became internet retail, and the average parcel filled up with pillows, lampshades, moulded foam and a great deal of air. A carrier's truck would fill to the roof and leave the terminal at half its legal payload — and the bill, calculated on weight, would not cover the trip. Dimensional weight is the answer the industry arrived at: if your package takes up more space than its weight has paid for, we will charge you for the space instead.
The usual way to write it is , where is a divisor such as 139 or 5000. I have deliberately not written it that way. A divisor is a number with hidden units and no obvious meaning, and it makes the rule feel arbitrary. Turn it over and it becomes a density — 1728/139 = 12.43 pounds per cubic foot — and suddenly the rule says something you can picture: below about twelve and a half pounds per cubic foot, we bill space. That is a sentence you can hold in your head while looking at a skid. The divisor form is the same arithmetic wearing a disguise, and the disguise is why so few shippers can say what their divisor actually means.
Round first, then multiply. Every major carrier rounds each measured dimension UP to the next whole inch or centimetre before anything is multiplied, then rounds the finished dimensional weight up again. A carton measuring 12.1 by 10.2 by 8.3 inches is billed as 13 by 11 by 9. Doing the rounding at the end instead — multiplying the true dimensions and then rounding once — is the single most common error in home-built freight quotes, and on a large carton it can miss by several pounds. It is also silently self-serving in the wrong direction: your estimate always comes out light, so the surprise always arrives on the invoice.
Two carrier-specific facts worth carrying, both dated August 2026 and both worth re-checking. USPS moved its rectangular-parcel divisor from 166 to 139 effective 12 July 2026, per the Domestic Mail Manual; non-rectangular parcels are still handled by multiplying length by width by height, applying a 0.785 shape factor, and dividing by 166. And USPS applies no dimensional weight at all to a parcel under one cubic foot, which is a real exemption with no counterpart at UPS or FedEx — they apply it to every package they carry, at any size.
Finally, remember what this figure is and is not. It is a candidate, not a bill. The carrier charges the larger of this and the scale weight, and on some services a third floor sits underneath both — a UPS Large Package carries a minimum billable weight of 90 lb regardless of what the box weighs or measures. Dimensional weight only ever tells you what the size is worth; the chargeable-weight page tells you whether anybody cares.
