A fluid column presses down with its own weight: every metre of water (ρ = 1000 kg/m³, g = 9.80665 m/s²) adds about 9.8 kPa — that's why your ears pop at the bottom of the deep end. This is gauge pressure; add atmospheric pressure for absolute. Water-treatment operators use the same relation daily to convert between metres of head and pump pressure.
