GB\text{GB}

gigabyte

Informationexact by definition

One billion bytes, exactly, in the decimal convention — the unit memory cards, drives and mobile data allowances are sold in. The binary gibibyte is 1,073,741,824 bytes, about 7.4% larger.

Watch out: This is where the two ladders start to hurt. A drive sold as 500 GB holds 500 billion bytes, which an operating system reporting in gibibytes shows as roughly 465 — and calls GB while doing it. Nothing has been lost and nothing was overstated; two different units are wearing the same three letters.
