kilobyte
Informationexact by definition
One thousand bytes, exactly, in the decimal convention used by storage manufacturers and by the SI. The binary neighbour, the kibibyte, is 1024 bytes — 2.4% larger.
Watch out: Older software, and some current software, prints "KB" while actually meaning 1024 bytes. At this scale the discrepancy is small enough to ignore and large enough to be the seed of every argument further up the ladder.
