The joule per kilogram-kelvin is the SI unit of specific heat capacity: the energy needed to raise one kilogram of a substance by one kelvin. As the coherent SI combination it needs no conversion and its factor of 1 is exact. The kelvin in the denominator is a temperature interval, so a value in J/(kg·K) may be used with a rise in Celsius degrees without any conversion.
Watch out: Specific heat depends on whether the substance is held at constant pressure or constant volume. For solids and liquids the two are nearly equal and the distinction is usually ignored, but for gases c_p and c_v differ substantially: for dry air, about 1005 versus 718 J/(kg·K).
