Mt
megatonne
Massexact by definition
The megatonne is one million tonnes, exactly 10⁹ kilograms. National greenhouse gas inventories are reported in megatonnes of CO₂ equivalent, and so are steel, cement and fertiliser production figures for a mid-sized country.
Watch out: Written Mt, it is one letter away from mt and one capital away from the megaton of TNT, which is an energy. Emissions reporting uses Mt CO₂e; weapon yields use Mt TNT. They are not the same quantity and cannot be converted into each other.
