UK long ton

Massexact by definition

The UK long ton is exactly 2240 avoirdupois pounds, or 1016.0469088 kilograms. It is exact because the pound is exact. It is the traditional British ton, still used in shipping displacement and in some commodity contracts.

Watch out: It is about 12 percent heavier than the US short ton and 1.6 percent heavier than the metric tonne. The metric tonne sits so close to the long ton that a shipping figure quoted in unqualified tons is often left unchallenged when it is wrong by the whole difference.

Where the unit came from

Twenty hundredweight of 112 pounds each. The odd 112 comes from the medieval wool trade, where a hundredweight of eight stone was near enough to a hundred for commerce and much easier to halve repeatedly.
