One kilovolt per millimetre, equal to 1,000,000 V/m exactly, and the same size as one megavolt per metre. It is the standard unit of dielectric strength on material datasheets.
Watch out: A datasheet dielectric strength in kV/mm is a short-time breakdown figure measured on a thin specimen to a defined ramp rate, and it falls with thickness, temperature, moisture and time under stress. Designing an insulation system at the datasheet number is designing at the failure point; working stresses are a fraction of it.
