mS/m
millisiemens per meter
Electrical conductivityexact by definition
The millisiemens per metre is one thousandth of a siemens per metre, equal to 10 microsiemens per centimetre. It is the standard unit of ground conductivity in geophysical electromagnetic surveying, where an EM induction meter reads soil directly in mS/m, and it appears in groundwater and salinity mapping. The factor of 1e-3 is exact, being an SI prefix.
Watch out: Geophysical instruments report an apparent conductivity averaged over a depth of investigation set by coil spacing and orientation, not the conductivity of any one layer. Two instruments over the same ground legitimately read differently.
