S/m
siemens per meter
Electrical conductivityexact by definition
The siemens per metre is the SI unit of electrical conductivity, the reciprocal of resistivity in ohm-metres. Its factor of 1 is exact as the coherent SI combination. It spans an enormous range: copper is 5.96e7 S/m, seawater about 5 S/m, drinking water around 0.05 S/m and ultrapure water 5.5e-6 S/m.
Watch out: Thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity share the word conductivity and nothing else. Thermal conductivity is measured in W/(m·K) and describes heat flow; this one is S/m and describes charge flow. In a water treatment context conductivity always means the electrical quantity.
