mS/cm

millisiemens per centimeter

Electrical conductivityexact by definition

The millisiemens per centimetre is a thousand microsiemens per centimetre and equals exactly 0.1 S/m, an exact factor from the prefix and the centimetre. It is the practical unit for high-salinity waters: seawater is about 53 mS/cm, brackish water 5 to 30, and softener brine and reverse osmosis reject run in the tens.

Watch out: Irrigation and soil salinity work uses this unit under the older name dS/m, decisiemens per metre, which is numerically identical to mS/cm. A soil extract at 4 dS/m and one at 4 mS/cm are the same salinity.
