Saturn takes 29.46 years to circle the Sun — roughly a human generation, which is why astrologers made it the planet of age, discipline and time, and why the "Saturn return" at twenty-nine acquired its folklore. Babylonian astronomers tracked the slow drift closely enough to predict its stations and retrogrades arithmetically, centuries before geometry entered astronomy.
The long year drives real seasons: Saturn's 26.7° axial tilt means each spring lasts over seven years, and the rings — tilted with the planet — open and close from Earth's viewpoint on the same schedule, vanishing edge-on roughly every 15 years. Galileo was baffled when the "handles" he had drawn in 1610 disappeared in 1612; the ring-plane crossing explained it only decades later. Cassini watched an entire northern spring and summer arrive, including the giant storm of 2010–2011 that erupted, circled the planet, and collided with its own tail.
