Learning zone
Saturn outweighs Earth 95 times over, yet at its one-bar "surface" the gravitational acceleration is only six per cent stronger than at home — the reward for spreading all that mass through a volume 760 times Earth's. The convention matters here more than anywhere: this figure is gravity alone, at the equator, excluding rotation. Add the centrifugal effect of the 10.7-hour spin and the effective weight an equatorial floater would feel drops to 8.96 m/s² — less than Earth's. Saturn is the one giant planet where you would weigh less than you do at home.
The steep difference between the two conventions, 14 per cent, is itself a measurement of how hard the planet spins for its density. Balloon-borne exploration concepts for the giant planets lean on numbers like these: at Saturn's cloud tops a human would experience familiar weight, unfamiliar everything else.
