It is the most commonly printed rating on domestic and light commercial flowmeters, shower heads, taps and small pumps. The conversion is exact, both the litre and the minute being exactly defined.

About the liter per minute
Litres per minute is the flow unit sized for things you can watch happen. A kitchen tap runs 6 to 9 L/min, a modern shower head 7 to 10, a garden hose 15 to 20, and the small rotameters and paddle-wheel meters bolted to equipment are nearly always engraved in it. Medical gas flows live here too: home oxygen concentrators are prescribed and rated at 1 to 5 L/min. Across the Atlantic divide, one US gallon per minute is 3.785 L/min, so American fixture ratings translate by a factor of roughly four.
The most memorable number in this unit is biological. A resting adult heart pumps about 5 L/min, the physiologist's cardiac output, which is more or less a kitchen tap at half open; hard exercise raises it to 20 L/min or beyond. Run the resting figure for a day and it comes to roughly 7000 litres, seven tonnes of blood moved daily by an organ the size of a fist.
