The microfarad earns its position as the most printed capacitance unit by covering the jobs where capacitors store real energy rather than just shape signals. Power supply reservoir capacitors run from hundreds to tens of thousands of microfarads, sized by how far the voltage may sag between charging pulses; motor run capacitors sit in the tens; and the 0.1 µF ceramic decoupling capacitor is scattered across every circuit board in the world, one per chip, as local storage against switching spikes.

The numbers pair conveniently with the kilohm decade next door: the site's RC time constant solver shows 1 µF against 1 kΩ giving exactly one millisecond, which is why timing circuits are so often drawn from these two families. The capacitor energy solver puts scale on the storage: a 10,000 µF capacitor charged to 25 V holds $\tfrac{1}{2}CV^2$, about 3 joules, enough for a fat spark yet only a few ten-thousandths of the energy in a single AA cell.

A quirk this page inherits from history: the millifarad, sitting legitimately between microfarads and farads, is essentially boycotted. Catalogues and schematics write 4,700 µF and 10,000 µF rather than 4.7 mF and 10 mF, partly habit and partly because mF spent decades as a marking for the microfarad itself, so the safest course was never to write it at all. The microfarad therefore covers six orders of magnitude of real parts nearly single-handed.
