The microfarad is one millionth of a farad, and it is the most commonly printed capacitor unit. Power supply smoothing, motor run and start capacitors, and audio coupling all sit in this range. The factor of 1e-6 is exact, being an SI prefix.
Watch out: Old components and HVAC parts often mark microfarads as MFD, mfd or even MF. On a motor run capacitor, MFD means microfarad and never millifarad. Aluminium electrolytics also carry wide tolerances, commonly minus 20 to plus 80 percent, and lose capacitance as they age.
